An image of me, Michael Meschbach

Hello!

My name is Michael Meschbach, and I am a lighting designer from Chicago. My work is one of emotion, thought, and connectivity. Throughout the body of the designs I have created, they center on the idea of seeing something happen, and then feeling as if you are actually there.

My Statement

Many of the core systems I rely on to convey said emotions are color, shape, and language. I use them in ways that the emotion belongs, and with those elements, I shape them into the setting to make a point clearer. I want to make the audience discern what the characters can feel, guiding them in a direction to keep them immersed in the story at hand. Light is a tool to guide one's attention. The same can be said for darkness, as it draws attention away from itself. Using this to my advantage allows for creating landscapes that don’t exist physically, but can be made artificially, and feel just the same. We can create worlds within worlds using just an on-off switch, a border between the seen and unseen. In the black-and-white world we live in, the metaphorical “gray” can be reached through this kind of imagination and manipulation. My goal is to create an alternate reality within each of my works, and in turn, draw the audience in to feel as if they are experiencing it firsthand.
